GSoC: Konqueror Bookmarks with Akonadi and Nepomuk

I’ve been accepted as a Google Summer of Code student too for KDE! Third time lucky. Of the two propossals I sent, the one about getting a brand new bookmarks system for konqueror is the one which got accepted.  That’s great, because current Konqueror bookmarks was showing its age. Most of the main browsers today have a more advanced bookmarking system. Currently it’s easier for a user to search his bookmarks with krunner than doing so with Konqueror itself. This will be no more. The bookmarks will now be stored with Nepomuk and Akonadi and will be easily found using an awesome location bar similar to firefox’ one, using krunner, the bookmarks editor or the bookmarks menu itself.

As Chani (who has also been accepted as a GSoC student this year) has suggested, I’ll do a GSoC weekly report of my project, so be tunned konqueror users! Now that we are in the community bonding period, I’ve started the project by fixing some konqueror bugs that I should have fixed long time ago, and will continue by testing the grounds of Akonadi and Nepomuk. Today it’s been quite productive, I commited 4 bugfix-patches to trunk, and I even had time to play the drums and continue working in a patch of mine whose purpose is adding virtual mesh networks support in VirtualBox. That will allow me to test meshias in my own laptop using virtual machines. What is meshias? it’s my final project in the university which is an implementation of the AODV mesh networks routing protocol. Good stuff :D.

Now it’s time to go to the university, so have a good afternoon and goodluck with your community bonding process to everyone participating in GSoC.

Congrats! Will this be optional? I imagine many people would object to having MySQL running just so they can open their webbrowser 🙂

What it would be REALLY great it’s to have the option of sync between Konqueror Bookmarks and Diigo or Delicious. That would be really useful, because nowdays a lot of people usus them, and I think (I might be wrong), that the old konqueror had that. Firefox at leats does.
If you could something like that, a lot of people would apreciate it.

I agree, some kind of integration with online services would be really useful!

if its saved @ akonadi someone just needs to implement a sync tool.

That’s one of the benefits of using Akonadi. It decouples the place where bookmarks are stored from using them.

Once the delicious resource in playground/pim is finished, the bookmark using application will automatically gain access.

I currently use ‘keditbookmarks –exporthtml’ to create bookmarks.html, which I use as my home page. Please preserve this feature. I have lots of bookmarks, and the pullaside menus can be fiddly.
Plus, this way I can use Edit=>Find. Plus, I can increase font size (Important for older users). Keditbookmarks could use some improvement-try moving a submenu to a main menu entry. It’s a mess. Thanx.

    Great !
Will your work be tightly linked to konqueror or do you plan to do something that can be used by others apps (future KDE web browsers…)

So, we are going to get wonderful_bar in konqueror ?

Great to hear that. Please feel free to bring any Nepomuk related questions and problems to me.

Trying to sort Konqueror bookmarks with nearly 2,000 total was an extremely painful experience. I just gave up. Simple drag drop / cut paste would freeze the UI for long periods, can’t see where you’re dropping, copy-not-move-drop.. ugh.

So happy to read more abouy Nepomuk intregation.. the idea is turning out to be really good from a user perspective. I like how it’s turning out.

But right now with about 300mb sesame2 database, any Nepomuk use takes 10-30 seconds or more UI block for me. For example, changing a file star rating from 4 to 5 freezes Dolphin UI for at least 10 seconds. Virtuoso just segaulted routinely. So there’s a lot there still to work out. Assuming it all gets better, KDE desktop will be pure gold.

@Roland: there’s a similar bookmarks:/ kioslave somewhere in svn, it may be in 4.3 by now I don’t know

What would be really great if it also where possible to automatically have a method for Firefox using Konquerors bookmarks.
